Marching towards Supercross 2012 - flashback to 2009 A2 Supercross

It was almost three years ago - the Anaheim 2 Supercross of the 2009 AMA Supercross Series. Remember who won? Hint - he won the 2007 AMA Supercross Championship, and would go on to win the 2009 AMA Supercross Series as well! And the guy that won the 250 West race? He would go on to win the 2009 AMA West Regional Supercross Championship, and the 2009 AMA MX Lites outdoor championship.

James Stewart wins Anaheim Supercross! Chad Reed takes over points lead! Ryan Dungey wins in 250 West Lites!

Anaheim Supercross

1:45pm: It's a typical, warm, sunny 'winter' afternoon in southern California - above 80 degrees without a cloud in the sky. The action has already started for today's race, with practice going on right now. The track itself is a little bit dry right now in some places. 2008 AMA Eastern Regional Supercross Champion Trey Canard will not be racing tonight because of the lingering effects of a crash and concussion from last weekend's event in Phoenix. James Stewart, Josh Grant, and Chad Reed have the fastest practice times as of right now.

3:15pm: James Stewart crashes at the end of a practice session. Rumors abound the he has a broken wrist. We go over to the L & M Racing pit area, ask L & M staff members the status of James and his wrist, and everyone responds with either 'No comment' or 'We have no idea'. We'll know shortly about James and his wrist once the pits settle down ...

7:32pm: First 250 moto takes off for the night time program - it's Jake Weimer 19, followed by team-mate Ryan Morais 116 and Daniel Reardon. After six laps, and the checkered flag, its Weimer first, Morais second, Reardon third. Jason Lawrence finishes 11th after falling.

7:45pm: The second 250 West moto takes off ... and at the end of the first lap it's Ryan Sipes 31 on KTM with the lead! On the final lap, Dungey makes a move to get around Sipes - but Sipes takes the win, Dungey second, and Justin Brayton third.

7:59pm: The first 450 heat race takes off ... and it's Mike Alessi wit the holeshot! On the second corner, a right hander, Andrew Short passes Alessi for the lead. It's Short leading, Ryan Villopoto has moved into second, and defending Supercross Champion Chad Reed has moved into third! Alessi is fourth. Then, Reed moves past Villopoto into second on lap five! It's Short, Reed, Villopoto, .... and Alessi a ways back in fourth. Tight battle up front - Short leading, Reed right on his tail, and Villopoto just behind. After a tight right hander on the sixth lap, Reed edges past Short! At the end of eight laps, it's Reed, Short, and Villopoto third! Davi Millsaps works up to fourth, M. Alessi fifth.

Defending Supercross Champion Chad Reed on the number 1 Suzuki wins his heat

8:13pm: James Stewart is racing! The holeshot for 450 heat 2 goes to ... Josh Grant 33! James Stewart is right behind in second! Right after the end of the first lap, Stewart edges past Grant and into the lead! Forget the potentially broken wrist! It's Stewart out front, Grant in second, Kevin Windham 14 in third. Stewart starting to pull out a comfortable lead over Grant, who in turn has a comfortable lead over Windham. At the end of the eight lap heat, it's James Stewart with the victory, Josh Grant finishes second, and Kevin Windham third. Tim Ferry is fourth.
